The Potala... no more a monastry

Lhasa, Tibet, China

The Potala Palace, located in Lhasa, was the political and religious center of Tibet. A monastery and the political headquarters for decades. Today it looks more like a Chinese Disneyland than a historical monument. Yet it still houses the tombs of many Dalai Lama.

With the help of the Chinese government, work is done in the monasteries. But only in few of them. The monks are not autonomous in deciding what kind of work must be done. The work, are of course, done under the supervision of the cameras.

 Lhasa, Tibet, China

The Drepung Monastery is close to Lhasa. It is the largest of all Tibetan monasteries and is located on the Gambo Utse mountain. Almost half of the monastery was destroyed by the Chinese in 1951. Nowadays it is open for tourism but under the eyes of the Chinese government. Both of the tourists and the monks are under the security cams.

 Lhasa, Tibet

In front of the Potala, the historical residence of Dalaï lamas and monastry, stands now a park place for tourist buses like CITS or for Chinese governmental cars. The Potala has been transformed into a museum for mass tourism; just few monks are allowed inside for general maintenance. The picture of the present dalaï lama is forbidden since 1997.
